Garden Musings

It’s officially summer. We’re halfway through the year, and the days are long.

The rhythm of life is such a gift. My new garden reminds me of this daily. I wake up at 6 a.m. and see what’s new and what needs tending. Every day is new and important in the garden, and what happened yesterday no longer matters. As much as I anticipate growth and blooming, it will happen when it’s good and ready. No sooner.

Today we finally got some rain. I couldn't believe how much everything had grown. The leaves seemed greener and every plant more exuberant. The rain somehow made it all feel exaggerated but also a little messy and chaotic.

And I was kind of disappointed that there weren't enough flowers. Almost a little panicked for a minute which is kind of absurd when you really think about it. I think that’s part of the creative process. Self doubt on steroids.

And meanwhile, life is a little messy, too.

My longtime employer closed its doors, bringing a long chapter of my career to an end. My teens are busy "teenaging" (enough said). The art center where I teach had a massive flood and closed its doors as well.

But maybe that's okay. It's time to start blooming, I guess. I have a few fun things “growing” behind the scenes that aren’t ready for prime time. I’ll keep you posted.
