Reflections from 7 Collective’s latest exhibition

What a phenomenal journey it has been preparing for and hosting The 7th Sense: Artistic Instinct. I love when work doesn’t feel like work at all. As if creating art and collaborating with wonderful people isn’t enough — the response and support from friends and strangers has been overwhelmingly special.

A warm thanks to all who came to the reception, showed up for our “meet the artist” gatherings, went on your own, or just generally cheered us on.

A number of paintings have sold during the show which is always a bonus.

I wish I could show you all of the art in this post but we probably filled the room with more than 80 original paintings. Here are just a few nice snapshots:

Throughout this exhibition I’ve received a number of comments on my own work. Several people have told me or others that they feel a sense of calm. It’s interesting because I don’t always feel calm on the inside but I certainly do actively seek it. Especially these days and in this crazy world. This whole collection of paintings has become a small series I call “rituals and stillness.” While the subject matter varied, each piece is a nod to that longing for quietude and care.

From my website: “As I paint, I navigate between play and control until I find a sweet moment of flow, where I can follow along and respond intuitively. I hope the viewer will feel that conversation — slow down and stay a while — reflecting on the same beautiful balance we all navigate in daily life.”

As my kids have grown, I’ve discovered that I have a little more room to pursue interests and relationships that matter to me. Yet I have to fight to protect that space from the noise of the external world, the ever-persistent mental load, and unwanted energy that tries to seep into the cracks. Perhaps “fight” is too strong a word. It’s more like an intentional advocation. A proactive cultivation of an inner world that feels safe, connected, and true. A nourishing of the soul through consistent practice of self love.

In my yoga practice, one of the cues I hear and think about a lot is “root down to rise up”. How refreshing and simple. Such a poignant statement of balance, nourishment, and empowerment.

I owe much gratitude to this talented group of women of Seven Collective who made it all fun, easy, and worthwhile. I can say that with sincerity and true admiration.

This is the FINAL WEEKEND to go see the exhibition so I’ll give it one final plug. The exhibition is up through Sunday, October 26.
